Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful
antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals. CoQ10
also goes by the name ubiquinone because of its
ubiquitous (widespread)
distribution throughout the body.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) aids the transformation of food into adenosine
triphosphate, or ATP, the energy which our bodies run on.
Almost every cell of the human body contains Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).
The mitochondria, the area of cells where energy is produced, contains
the most CoQ10. The heart and liver contain the highest amount of CoQ10.
Several controlled clinical trials on people with congestive heart
failure have shown promising positive results. Also, preliminary
positive results have been seen in people with cardiomyopathies, heart
arrhythmias, and angina.
Recommended Dosage: Adult, take 30–90 mg per day.
People with specific health conditions may supplement with higher levels
(under the supervision of a physician). Most of the research
on heart conditions have used 90–150 mg of CoQ10 per day.
People with cancer who are considering taking much higher amounts should
discuss it with your doctor before supplementing. Improvement in
cancer patients on high dosage of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) are mostly
anecdotal reports and not controlled clinical trials.
CoQ10 is best taken with meals to improve
absorption.
